Normal Creatinine Levels by Age and Sex

Why creatinine reference ranges vary with age, sex and muscle mass.

Creatinine depends on muscle mass, so the normal range varies. Adult values are roughly 0.6 to 1.2 mg/dL, with men typically a little higher than women. More muscle means more creatinine. Older adults with less muscle may have lower values that still reflect reduced function — which is why eGFR is more reliable.
