Not all kidney disease starts the same way. Your risk depends on genetics, lifestyle, and medical history. This article explains how doctors assess YOUR kidney disease risk.
Understanding Risk Scores: A kidney disease risk score combines multiple factors to predict whether you'll develop kidney disease in the next 5-10 years. The score ranges from 1-100 (1 = very low risk, 100 = very high risk).
Factors That Increase Your Risk: Diabetes (35-40% of all CKD), Hypertension (25-30% of CKD), Obesity (risk increased 30-50%), Smoking (20% increased risk), Family history (genetic predisposition increases risk 2-3x), Age over 60, Race/ethnicity (African Americans and South Asians have 3-4x higher risk), Proteinuria (protein in urine), High cholesterol, Certain medications (NSAIDs, some antibiotics).
Your Risk Category: 0-20 points (Low risk) - Kidney disease unlikely in next 10 years. 21-40 points (Moderate risk) - 10-25% chance of CKD in 5 years. 41-60 points (High risk) - 25-50% chance of CKD in 5 years. 61+ points (Very high risk) - Greater than 50% chance of advanced CKD.
What TO DO Based on Your Score: If Low Risk: Get annual kidney screening, Keep blood pressure less than 130/80, Exercise 30 mins/day, Eat heart-healthy diet. If Moderate Risk: Kidney screening every 6 months, Start blood pressure medication if needed, Lose 5-10% of body weight, Eat kidney-protective diet. If High Risk: See kidney specialist, Quarterly kidney function tests, Blood pressure target less than 120/80, Consider SGLT2 inhibitor. If Very High Risk: Monthly nephrology visits, Aggressive medication management, Prepare for dialysis or transplant planning.
Your kidney disease risk isn't fixed. Risk scores are predictions, not destiny. Even if your score is high, aggressive prevention and treatment can slow or stop kidney disease progression. Get your score calculated. It takes 15 minutes and could add decades of healthy kidney function.
