Hydronephrosis is swelling of a kidney caused by urine backing up when its drainage is blocked.
Common causes include kidney stones, strictures, pregnancy, and an enlarged prostate.
Prolonged blockage can damage the kidney, so the cause is usually treated to relieve the backup.
