Acute Kidney Injury: Sudden Kidney Trouble

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a sudden drop in kidney function over hours or days. Unlike chronic kidney disease, it is often reversible when the cause is treated promptly. Common causes include severe dehydration or blood loss, serious infection, certain medicines including some painkillers, and urinary obstruction. Symptoms include passing less urine, swelling, fatigue and confusion, and nausea. Treatment targets the underlying cause with careful fluid management. Some people need temporary dialysis. Early treatment greatly improves recovery.
