Hemodialysis: What the Treatment Involves

Hemodialysis uses a machine and a filter to clean the blood. Blood leaves the body, passes through the filter, and returns — all within a single session that usually lasts about four hours. Most people receive hemodialysis three times a week. Reliable access to the circulation is needed, usually a fistula created surgically in the arm. The diet that goes with hemodialysis limits salt and fluid, watches potassium and phosphorus, and keeps protein adequate. Report any pain, cramping or low blood pressure during treatment to the care team — these are usually manageable.
