Dialysis: An Overview of the Two Main Options

Dialysis does some of the work of failing kidneys — removing waste, salt and extra fluid from the blood. It is usually needed when kidney function drops below about 15 percent. Hemodialysis cleans the blood outside the body using a machine, typically at a centre two to three times a week. Peritoneal dialysis cleans the blood inside the body using the lining of the abdomen, and can often be done at home. The choice between them is a medical one, not just a preference. It depends on residual kidney function, vascular access, home circumstances and support. Dialysis sustains life but does not cure kidney failure. Many people on dialysis go on to have a transplant, which generally offers a better long-term outlook.
