Living Kidney Donation: Eligibility and Protections

Living donation is when a healthy person gives one of their two kidneys to someone with kidney failure. A person can live a full, healthy life with a single kidney. Near relatives — spouse, parents, siblings, children and grandparents — can donate after evaluation. Non-relatives require approval from a State Authorisation Committee confirming the donation is altruistic and unpaid. A donor undergoes a thorough medical, surgical and psychological evaluation, independent of the recipient’s care. No payment for an organ is lawful in any form. Only reimbursement of documented expenses and genuine lost earnings during recovery is permitted.
