High blood pressure is both a cause and a consequence of kidney disease. Sustained high pressure damages the kidney’s small vessels, while damaged kidneys make pressure harder to control.
For most people with kidney disease, the target is a blood pressure below 130/80 mmHg.
What helps: blood-pressure medicines (often ACE inhibitors or ARBs) taken as prescribed, less salt, regular activity, and home blood-pressure checks.
Controlling blood pressure is one of the most effective things you can do to protect your kidneys.
