The cost of kidney treatment in India varies widely by city, hospital and insurance. Government schemes such as Ayushman Bharat cover much of the cost for eligible families.
A private hemodialysis session typically costs between Rs 1,500 and Rs 4,000 depending on the city and filters used. Government and scheme-empanelled centres can be free or subsidised.
Transplant surgery and the first year of care typically range from Rs 5 lakh to Rs 15 lakh or more.
The cost people forget is lifelong anti-rejection medicine after transplant, which is frequently not covered by insurance.
