Kidney stones are hard deposits of minerals and salts that form inside the kidney. They hurt mainly when they move into the narrow tube draining the kidney.
Symptoms include severe flank pain that may move towards the groin, blood in the urine, nausea and vomiting, and burning on urination.
Small stones often pass with fluids and pain relief; larger stones may need shock-wave treatment or a procedure.
Drinking enough water to keep your urine pale is the single most effective prevention, especially in hot weather.
